#21 Webtoon to conquer global markets

February 24, 2022

Webtoons have transformed the comics industry into a new type of entertainment with innovations in content development, consumption and monetization.

In Korea, the market grew to a billion dollar industry, and key players such as Naver, Kakao and Ridi are now eying global markets. In the US, the world’s second comics market, Naver now draws 14 million monthly active users. In Japan, the world’s first market, Kakao and its subsidiary Piccoma generated the biggest revenue out of all non gaming smartphone apps last year with 37.6 billion yen.

Webtoons are now everywhere and for those still not used to scrolling on their smartphones, TV adaptations are on the rise: All of Us Are Dead, Hellbound, Sweet Home (Netflix), Dr. Brain (Apple TV).

What about France? While companies like Delitoon and Izneo have been at the forefront of digital innovation, what are the opportunities for the local ecosystem and creators?
